On the Rotting Marble by Ellie Brown & Dinosaur Kilby

What do you want to have achieved in 50 years’ time?

England is haunted.

Haunted by colonialism, by politics, by failure, by the future. There’s something rotten here, the ground is sick, why does nothing ever change? We need to exorcise the demons.

Part flag, part banner, part fallen tent, Dinosaur has created a curtain to wrap and hold these questions. Our contemporary displaced attention has affected my ability to know what I want. Do you feel the same?

Dinosaur Kilby is an Artist-Curator based in Birmingham, UK. He currently works at Wolverhampton Art Gallery as a Creative Producer. Between 2021–23 he completed an Artist-Curator Traineeship at Eastside Projects. He set up and ran Prayer Room between 2023–25. Dinosaur is currently working on free house, an artist studio complex in Digbeth, Birmingham. Recent projects include ‘Making Space 3.0’ at Wolverhampton Art Gallery, ‘Peasants Revolt Now!’ at Prayer Room, ‘Are the Stones Standing Still’ at Staffordshire St. and ‘If It Thunders on All Fool’s Day’ at Eastside Projects.

What does it mean to haunt…? To cause repeated suffering and distress? To repeatedly frequent or patronise? Pounding the smooth travertine tiles that pave the arcades of Milton Keynes’s building for shopping, Ellie searches for answers.

Ellie Brown is a researcher, writer and editor. Her work examines the afterlives of a twentieth-century vision for a new Britain – of shopping centres and public art. Ellie hold a PhD in art and architectural history of British shopping centres built between 1967–82. In 2025, she was a Research Fellow at the Henry Moore Institute in Leeds, researching Franta Belsky’s Totem for Manchester’s Arndale Centre. Other projects include writing about the public commissions of artists Boyd & Evans for MK Gallery and interviewing the sculptor Liliane Lijn for Pooleyville.
