An Extension of the Paranormal by Joss Whittle

An exhibition of psychic phenomena; life drawing ‘taken’ from the vaults, images from dead artists whose works, little more than looking-glass reflections of lost worlds that sought to immortalise the rich and powerful, have become ghosts that hardly speak to us now, return recast reborn for our times upon the old and discarded remains from this age of consumerism.

Packaging appearing like stained and figured hides that drape the chamber walls now reflect not light but paint, itself. Not there to contrive immortality of the commonplace but declare autonomy of its language, as visual poetry, here of the human form, ‘of and from’ those ghosts denying their flesh while their spirit lives through successive rebirths and innovation, the mother of true creativity.

Joss Whittle is a Milton Keynes-based artist with a studio at Arts Central Studios. His work consists of contemporary re-interpretations of classic or well-known paintings, executed on consumer-based waste cardboard. This exhibition is a continuation of his recent show ‘Paranormal’. A self-initiated exhibition held at The Box Arts Club, where works were viewed in the dark and presented by torchlight. This new interpretation brings what was dark into the light.
